The primary purpose of the Industrial Affiliates Program (IAP) is to establish close cooperation as well as technology transfer between the Virginia Tech BWAC site (referred to as "Center" henceforth) and its IAP partners that are interested in supporting research and education activities of BWAC. Becoming a member of the Virginia Tech's BWAC IAP is an excellent way to get broad access to the Center's research and intellectual property, receive support in recruiting efforts, and setting the foundation for research collaboration opportunities.
Each member company will agree to contribute at least $40,000 annually in support of the Center and thereby will become a member for one year following the date of the agreement. Payment of these membership fees shall be made to the university through which the company exercises its membership in the Center. There is an industrial advisory board (IAB) consisting of at least one representative from each Center's member companies. The role and duties of the IAB are to identify research areas that are relevant to industry and to review projects and proposals responding most closely to the needs of the industry. Moreover, the IAB has the responsibility to review progress of the individual projects (as well as of the Center as a whole) at semi-yearly board meetings.
All IAP members have an option to obtain intellectual property (IP) rights to non-commercial, research-use, non-exclusive licenses for internal use, and will have the opportunity to obtain through additional negotiations, a commercial, non-exclusive, royalty-bearing, field-specific license, including the right to sublicense to subsidiaries and affiliates. In addition to the intellectual property related benefits, Industry Affiliates will have access to our exclusive Members Only section, which provides you with an opportunity to "Request a Speaker". This option allows you to request a Virginia Tech BWAC member to provide in-house training on new research technologies, consultations, or serve as a keynote at your conference or company functions. The form will automatically be sent to the affiliate's liaison for proper routing.
If you have not registered for the Member's Only section yet, please email Joyce Donathan for a user name and password. Once you have received your user name/password, you will be able to log into the Member's Only section. Other benefits of becoming an IAP Member include access to our faculty members' latest publications, technical bulletins, and white papers and "first to know" research discoveries. So stay tuned! Its an exciting time to be an Industry Affiliate!
